01
Start with the application
A tape name alone is not enough to select a grade. Describe the surface, process, operating conditions and how long the tape will remain in place. For masking, include removal timing and the required edge finish. For electrical insulation, provide the component and applicable design or test requirements.
02
Separate width, length and thickness
Width is measured across the tape, usually in millimetres. Roll length is the length of tape wound on one roll, usually in metres. Thickness is a separate measurement: specify whether your requirement refers to backing thickness or total tape thickness, and include the unit. A wider roll is not necessarily thicker.
03
Choose a purchasing format
For a standard format, ask which sizes and plain packaging are available. For custom slitting, provide the target width, length, core and tolerance requirements. Private label orders also require a label or packaging brief. Standard formats do not imply stock availability; custom work and sample arrangements need confirmation.
04
Make quotations comparable
Give quantities with units: rolls, cartons or pieces. If quoting by cartons, agree on rolls per carton. Include the delivery destination, requested timing and packaging. Ask for the quoted grade, dimensions, quantity, packing and delivery terms in writing so you can compare the same scope.
05
Evaluate a sample before committing
Ask about sample availability, charges and timing. Evaluate the selected sample on your actual surface and under your intended process conditions. For safety-critical electrical applications, review the grade-specific technical documents and required approvals; colour or appearance cannot establish an insulation rating.
06
Confirm the order details
Confirm the specification, agreed tolerances, packaging, quantity, delivery arrangement and sample or artwork approval before placing the order. Retain the agreed specification for repeat purchases. If your process or material changes, review suitability again.
